Karen's Review Of
Guest House Douro:

We have a reader to thank for sharing this wonderful guest house set in Ferdinand’s Wall in the historic district of Porto. Carmen and João discovered the house when they came to Porto on vacation from Montreal and were intrigued to find it for sale. As Carmen explains, all it took was to stand on the balcony to fall in love with the river view, the teensy little house with the black tiles and to know it was destined to be their home. Lots of work, frustrations and complications have resulted in what they term, “a happy ending, or rather, a happy beginning now with our wonderful guests.” One of a string of tall buildings all staggered and sandwiched together, overlooking the waterfront, it enjoys a historic ambiance and yet, is also limited by its narrow parameters. The breakfast room is intimate and has a limited number of tables so you will be asked to select a time slot. Breakfast is a spectacular feast of fruits, Portuguese cheeses, cold cuts, breads, cereals, yogurts, fresh squeezed orange juice. When selecting a room, know that while the waterfront rooms benefit from the river view, those overlooking the street are a little larger. Guestrooms are attractive and comfortable and have up to date bathrooms. Although, not the largest, request room 202 and stand on the balcony and like Carmen and João be captivated by this charming building, its setting and ambiance.

Guest House Douro strikes perhaps the perfect blend of a B&B and a 5 star hotel. Located in the heart of the Ribeira District on the riverfront, the centuries old structure sits discreetly nestled in the row of buildings straddling Rua Fonte Taurina and the quay along the River Douro. A small sign attached to the front entrance along the narrow lane is the only marker indicating its presence. The charm of this historical city is embodied in this area. It offers a peek back in time when the comm...

Our stay at the Guest House Douro was fantastic from beginning to end. Located on a busy street right near the River Douro, Guest House Douro is in the perfect spot to enjoy all that Porto has to offer.

Joao and Carmen greeted us upon arrival with a warm welcome and some delicious glasses of port (both chilled white and a room-temperature red) along with a plate of almonds.

Our river view room was delightful and impeccably clean. Although small, every amenity was p...
