British Columbia

Vancouver Island and the City of Vancouver are currently as far as we have traveled north from the states into Canada. But what an island and what a city.

Vancouver Island is anchored by its crown city, Victoria. Victoria is a wonderful smallish city (approximately 325,000 residents) with a European feel to it. The city also owes its heritage to the Coast Salish Indians as witnessed by the totem poles seen in the city. There is no end to the things to see and do in Victoria but save time to explore the island. The countryside is beautiful and wild and the beaches pristine and unspoiled. If you find yourself on the island during the salmon runs from late October to early December follow the path of the Sooke River to witness this amazing journey of Chinook, Coho, Sockeye and Chum struggling to return to the spot on the river where they were born and intend to reproduce. If the fish are lucky enough to avoid the Orcas prowling the inlets to gorge on the salmon they will probably end as a meal for the bear and bald eagles that swoop down to the river for an easy, delicious meal.

The city of Vancouver, the gateway to western Canada, is the pride of the country and is considered a world-class city. The city's eye appeal, besides its attractive skyline, is snow-capped mountains and ocean shores. When you add the city's diversity, culture and outdoor activities, it's easy to see why Vancouver attracts so many visitors.
